PAP Tests
Pap Tests
What are they?
PAP tests are tests that check the cells on the lining of the cervix. They are a screening test for cervical cancer. If cells are found that look different than normal cells, it is called an “abnormal PAP test”.
What does it mean if I have an abnormal PAP test?
It means that you might need treatment or that you doctor might want to more closely monitor specific symptoms. More tests are often necessary. Feel free to ask you doctor questions.
Why do PAP tests sometimes need to be repeated?
Reliable tests require that an adequate number of cells be tested. Reasons for inadequate cells include:
- PAP test done during period
- Vaginal creams, foams, gels being used by patient
- Douche or tampons 2 days prior to PAP
- Sex 2 days prior to PAP
- Vaginal infection
Repeat PAP tests are recommended for high quality preventive care.
